PRCMB SEMINAR SERIES

Marine Microbial Diversity in Hawaii's Coastal Waters:
A Collaboration Between the Pacific Research Center for Marine Biomedicine,
Diversa Corporation, and Students and Teachers from Kamehameha High School

One goal of this PRCMB Pilot Project is to develop a cohort of highly trained young Hawaiian biological scientists. This is being accomplished by incorporating faculty and students of Kamehameha High School into the studies of Hawaiian marine microbial diversity that are being conducted by PRCMB scientists and their colleagues in the biotechnology industry. In so doing, we are enabling these students to learn first hand the concepts, techniques, risks and benefits associated with applying biotechnology to the study of Hawaii's marine ecosystem.

A second goal is to develop ongoing research and education programs that complement the activities of the PRCMB. In pursuit of this goal, we are planning expansions of this biodiversity study with the J. Craig Venter Institute and the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation

In this seminar, progress towards attaining these two goals will be discussed.

Presenter:
Dr. Henry Trapido-Rosenthal, P.h.D., Associate Researcher,
Department of Oceanography and Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology

The Pacific Research Center for Marine Biomedicine (PRCMB) is a newly established center at the University of Hawaii dedicated to trans-disciplinary research designed to gain new knowledge about the profound impacts of the ocean on human health. The Center is funded by the National Science Foundation (OCE04-32479) and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (P50ES012740).
