This work examined for evidence that hypothetical auto-inducer compounds, such as those associated with quorum sensing behaviors in other microorganisms, may be involved with the induction of ciguatoxin production by the putative dinoflagellate, Gambierdiscus toxicus. This line of inquiry is intended to explain this ephemeral and apparently density-dependent toxin production, and better understand the environmental triggers for the ciguatera cycle in nature.
